Bingo is played by thousands of people all over the world. In fact, if you picked any point in time and took a wild guess, it’s likely that a few hundred people are busy playing a game of bingo at that very second. How many people do you think just yelled “Bingo!” right now?
The game we know today has its origins in mid-1500 Italian lottery, where it evolved into a game originally called “beano.” It only became Bingo when the games creator who popularized the game heard someone yelling out “Bingo!” instead – although we’re not entirely sure why, we can only guess that they must have misheard.
Here are some world records from the bingo universe.
The World’s Highest Bingo Game
The world’s highest bingo game was played in October 2009 – and just for the record, we’re referring to the world’s highest altitude. The landmark game took place on Mount Everest during a climb performed by employees of Gala Coral, who were initially climbing up to raise money for charity.
It’s not the first game to be played atop Mount Everest. The mountain has seen Angry Birds, poker, cricket – and might even see a game of rugby soon.
The Biggest Bingo Jackpot
The largest jackpot ever won during a bingo game according to Guinness World Records was more than 2 million dollars ($2, 185, 260) and was won by Christine Bradfield at the Castle Leisure Bingo Club in South Wales. If you’re wondering what happened to Christine after her big win, The Mirror reported that she had gone back to her job as a cashier – and not out of necessity, but out of choice.

The Largest Ever Game of Bingo
Also according to Guinness World Records, the largest game of bingo played to date involved just over 70, 000 people and was played on the 2ndof December, 2006. If anyone wants to beat this record, just how many bingo players do you think you can fit in your backyard – or a football pitch?
The Largest Ever Online Game of Bingo
The record for the largest online game of bingo played to date goes to Coca-Cola Park, which saw 493, 824 members playing a single game according to the Guinness World Records. The event took place on the 3rdof September, 2010 in Tokyo, Japan.
