It’s officially the start of a new year. For tabletop and board game fans, this means it’s time to check out new board game releases for 2021.

Used to playing the old classics like Monopoly and Risk? Prepare to add some of these upcoming games to your wish list. You might even discover an entirely new favourite.

Here’s what players can look forward to.

Anansi

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/317983/anansi/

Anansi is a mixture of a trick-taking game, and a trading card game.

Players use their cards to tell the stories of Anansi, the trickster god. The game draws heavily on mythological elements that many will find themselves drawn to. Bridge players will take to the trick-taking element (and the game might even be a great way in which to introduce the idea of tricks to newcomers).

Impressive concept, and great artwork adds even more to it.

From HeidelBAR Games, Anansi has its North American release set for 22 January, 2021.

Darwin’s Journey

Darwin’s Journey is a tabletop game that invites players to follow the journey of real-life explorer Charles Darwin. Set out on the board and make your own discoveries alongside other players.

For everyone? Maybe not. A lot of fun? It’s sure to be!

It can almost be compared to Risk, but trades the aspect of conquering for discovery.

Dice Theme Park

Know someone who happens to be really good at rolling the dice? Do you happen to be that person? Expect Dice Theme Park from Alley Cat Games in early 2021 (and show what you’ve got!).

Dice Theme Park is a tycoon-style management game that allows players to build and grow their theme park. Chance matters, but so does strategy. Good luck!

Masters Of The Universe: The Board Game

Here’s the board game a lot of people had no idea they spent their lives waiting for (until now). From game creator CMON, here’s the Masters Of The Universe board game will launch on Kickstarter in 2021.

It has the typical feeling of hero-battles-quest, and it looks like it might be out of this world.

Remember to watch a Masters Of The Universe marathon as you’re playing this one

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Players of Marvel Champions: The Card Game can look forward to several Hero Packs for the game in the same year. Set for 2021 release there’s Wasp, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.

Quantum Shock

Quantum Shock is a Kickstarter-funded game that focuses on survival horror.

The game contains references to time travel, dimensional skips, and other sci-fi elements that make games of this style fun. It looks like it’s going to be an intricate adventure.

For bonus points, drag in a smoke machine and creepy lighting for effect.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Blazing Vortex

Yu-Gi-Oh! fans rejoice (or quietly weep). The Blazing Vortex booster deck is coming in 2021 – and with it, 100 new cards. Do you need this one? No, but if you’re not winning as much as you should, you should get a bigger deck.
